IX: A New Year; It’s Time To Get Up

Hey! Hi! Guess what? We’re still on this positivity train. I know what you’re thinking, these posts have started to get extremely sparse, but I’ll tell you this, hope is not lost. Time is an ongoing thing, and yet I still feel like I’m in March of 2020 most days. It feels kinda like time stands still, yet it also waits for no one. I made a promise to myself to get back into writing and get back into the positive mindset, because what better way is there to live during ongoing uncertainty? Happy New Year my friends, and welcome back aboard. I’ve missed you.

What have you been up to? Been keeping busy and safe? I sure hope so! Can you believe it’s 2021 now? We made it, and I think everyone should raise a glass to that. The never ending year from who knows where, has ended. Now I know 2021 started off with a bang already and it’s only been a week and a half into the new year, but guess what? There’s nowhere to go but up now.

If you know me, you know I like to come up with themes for my years. I used to do this per semester of school and sometimes I found it to be more helpful than I realized. My favorite theme was “doing all the stuff and things”-- which was a theme about taking risks and going outside my comfort zone. It was scary, but rewarding. I digress, but I’ve decided that my theme for 2021 is “the comeback year”. Since there were so many things I had planned on doing in 2020, I told myself that it’s time for a comeback. This is my personal goal, but I encourage you to come up with your individual goal/ theme too! Less of a resolution, more of a generalized positive statement. Resolutions are good, but can carry a lot of accountability and pressure. I try to come up with achievable themes that are general enough to be able to be interpreted in any kind of way. So don’t stress! What’s your theme going to be? Don’t think too hard and don’t put too much pressure on yourself, it's going to be great and you’re going to be great!

It was weird to see all sorts of posts for the end of the year, but I wanted to share something with you. Maybe you saw a few posts from your friends and relatives about how much they accomplished during quarantine and how well they did, which is amazing! I’m not in any way diminishing anyone’s accomplishments, they do deserve to be celebrated! But in the same token, if 2020 was draining for you, as it was for most people (myself included), and it feels like you didn’t accomplish much of anything, I want you to do something for me. Take a step back and remember to thank yourself. You did accomplish something, you made it to today. Whenever you may read this, you made it to this day, right now. Life has probably thrown you some challenges and obstacles that you never intended to face, and you had to toughen up and take them and you know what? You did. Thank yourself for making it to today, because that’s something to celebrate. You are here, and I’m glad you are. If no one has told you this today or even just in a while, I’m so very proud of you and you should be too. I think you’re extraordinary. Please know how important you are. Thank you for being you.

Did you remember to do something today that makes you happy? I sure hope you did. It does wonders for your mental health. I’ll give you an example. Recently, I’ve been down about not being able to dance or take any dance classes in awhile. So I built the time into my schedule, to give myself a little class that I follow along with online. I’m already seeing differences in how I feel. It’s something that I love, and it sounds weird that like, doing something that you love can make you so happy-- duh! But it’s easy enough to lose this idea when you’ve been in quarantine. So here’s my tip for you, find a way to do your thing. Your mental health will thank you for it. Keeping your mind calm is so important right now, you deserve to be at ease!

I know it’s not always an easy thing to stay up on that positivity train, but trust me, it absolutely beats the alternative. I’ve had my fair share of days where I just feel like garbage because the world gets me down, but each day is a new day. I know that sounds lame and you’ve probably seen that on a poster somewhere, but it’s so true. Each day is a new chance to make something, change something, or be something-- whatever you want. It doesn’t have to be anything huge... make a painting, change your lockscreen, be a good person and hold the door for someone. Simple enough right? Absolutely.

I’ll leave you with this final thought today; a good friend of mine recently helped me put something else into perspective. I asked him why some of my friends seemed different and not like their usual selves, and he simply said “it’s not you, remember that everyone is going through this. Everyone has their own ways of dealing with what they go through on a daily basis and trust me, it’s not you. Just be there for them when they need it, and empathize with the fact that they have their own battles, including the ones they don’t share with you”. It can be easy to think “why haven’t we talked?” or “why haven’t they responded?” but it’s not always that simple. This pandemic has hit everyone differently and individually. And my friend is absolutely right; everyone is fighting their own battles including the ones they don’t share with us. And that’s okay. Just be each other’s support system when you can and that’ll go far.

I know things are still tough, but thank you for hopping aboard with me today. I promise it won’t be months that go by before you hear from me again. Things are going to get better.

As always, I’m gonna leave you with some song lyrics. Music is my thing and I love some good dramatic lyrics to end with…

We’ll be a fine line. We’ll be alright… We’ll be alright.” (Fine Line by Harry Styles)

Stand Clear Of The Closing Doors Please,

Lex
